Alcohol harms are social justice issues. In 2020 we have seen vulnerability, oppression, and exploitation be the catalyst for powerful social justice movements. Public health has a role to play in these movements, and we cannot understand what that is without understanding the intersections of who we are, what we experience, and forces running through society. The fifth annual California Alcohol Policy Alliance (CAPA) Summit focuses on bringing together diverse voices to speak out against disproportionate harms and abuses perpetrated by Big Alcohol and consider innovative strategies for the future.

The Summit will take place online over three consecutive Fridays: November 6th, November 13th, and November 20th, 2020.

Highlights include:

November 6th – Equity, Alcohol Injustice Discussions of the intersections of alcohol injustice, racial inequities, community violence, land-use, and historical disinvestment in communities of color. Featured speaker: Chanchanit Martorell, MA, Executive Director, Thai Community Development Center

November 13th – Covid-19 and Alcohol How COVID-19 and alcohol as an essential service has compromised the quality of life for millions. Featured speaker: Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

November 20th – Social Justice Informed Policy An active dialogue with spoken word artists, exploring the intersection and integration of art in social justice advocacy initiatives for the future. Featured speaker: Raul M. Herrera, Vice-Presidents of AJUPEME USA, an international ulama Mesoamerican hip-ball association.

Everyone concerned with alcohol harm, health equity, and community resilience are encouraged to attend. In a time of unprecedented corporate power coupled with the emergence of voices and groups that have been silenced for too long, that should be all of us.
